Page 2 of 3 What are Aikido’s different styles? Aikido is one alone. When O Sensei taught his art, there were various students, which then became Masters, each with their interpretation of his teachings, which is why their schools teach with some variations of the master’s art. This gave way to what became what is called “the styles of Aikido”. - Shin shin toitsu (Koischi Tohei)
- Iwama Ryu Aikido (Morihiro Saito)
- Yoseikan Aikido (Minoru Mochizuki, Jigoro Kano)
- Yoshinkan Aikido (Gozo Shioda)
- Tomiki Aikido (Kenji Tomiki, Jigoro Kano)
- Aikikai Aikido (Moriteru Ueshiba)
Each style presents greater or smaller differences, one cannot say if one is better than the other. It is up to the student to find the one that fits him best, but he must have in mind that there are as many styles of Aikido as there are interpretations of its teachings.
